Here are two examples of two Alternative music magazine both displaying conventions of a magazine. The artist featured on the front is generally the featured artists on the double page spread. Also a convention used is the use of   3-4 monochromatic colours on the front of the magazine and also follow that throughout the whole magazine.

Music Magazine Genre

The music genre I'm choosing for my magazine is Indie Rock originally Alternate Rock this is genre of music that came about in the 80's American underground scene and that was made popular in the 90's with such bands as The Strokes, Nirvana and Pearl Jam, And their British counter parts Blur, Pulp and The Cure This is a genre of music that descended from punk Rock, and other genres such as New Wave and Post Punk. What is unique to Alternate Rock is that non of the band/artists that fit under this genre have been part a large/major record label at the beginning of their career. In-stead signing for an independent record label often their own. Which gave it it's British name Indie Rock, 'Indie' standing for independent. Which later adopted as the American genre too. The success of this genre was majorly limited through out the early 70's late 80's but was made popular by the emergance of such sub-genres as Britpop and Grunge. I am choosing this genre as I believe that it is a form of music that is popular with my target audience 16-21 year old. like the punk era is was about not conforming to the pressures of society and rebelling against State, this category still holds these princples not so much towards politics, but toward major record labels and generic sound, and by being part of an independent record label they can do it their own way and not conform to norms and trends of mass produced music. Also this is a type of music that I enjoy and this will be shown through my work.

Front Cover

This is my front cover for my college magazine

Pricing and Target Audience

The age range of 16-19 male and female for my target audience as this the age range at Wyke college, the pricing for the magazine will be free to Wyke students with a NUS card but £1 to those without or to people outside the target audience who wish to buy the magazine. Also the magazine will be published weekly as suggested in the title of  magazine 'Wyke Weekly', I've chosen not to print it monthly as the news would be outdated and not of interest to my target audience as they will already know the new.

magazine logo

This my magazine logo for my college magazine as it says the magazine is weekly also with the Wyke logo being incorporated it show that the college magazine is link to Wyke therefore this is my college of choice for the magazine.

Magazine Cover draft

The masthead is in the top left corner of the magazine as this a main convention also it allow the masthead to be seen on the shelf. The rest of this draft follows conventions of magazine and I have chosen to lay the coverlines and teller out side the main image as it doesn't obstruct the view of image.

Photographs

I will not be using this image as it doesn't fit within the brief and is too casual for my college magazine

The glare in this photo makes the photo unusable for my magazine

I wont be using this image as it's out of focus and also is of a bin which I don't think will appeal to my target audience
I wont be using this in my magazine cover as the light exposure is too high

I could use this image after editing but at the moment it logo is not centered and the logo is not defined enough.

I will not be using this images as it is not a complete picture of the front of why and also it on a slight tilt also it not what I want my magazine to feature.
I may use this for my magazine as a teller image on my magazine as it show a clear view of the front the college and also shows as a college we have disabled access and have facilities for cyclists.
I will be not using this as a magazine cover as it not clear what it and whats the purpose of this
This image is not very clear and does really serve a purpose for the magazine

I wont be using this as the lighting is too low and also it doesn't really show what the college facilities are

Choice of College

The college I am choosing to feature in my college magazine is Wyke. This is because the facilities are easily available for photography purposes and also the age range at Wyke is 16-19 year old males and females and this is the demographic for a college magazine, as this is who occupy a college environment.
.
The masthead is monochromatic colour, which is cheap for production and a simple design often stands out more. The colour of the masthead is bright and contrasting to the background of the main image this is used to make it stand out more and grabs the reader's attention. One feature that is used in the magazine is a 3 tone colour scheme (excluding the pink). The use of the bright pink colour to the bottom left of the masthead draws the attention of the reader also the text 'splat' relates to the pink splat it's in and also in this instance has relation to the issue it's mentioning.

Conventions of A Magazine

Additionally you must produece a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP.

Main Task: the front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine. All images and text used must be original, produced by you - minimum of four images.
